Der ursprüngliche Bau, von dem noch die Krypta erhalten ist, war der erste steinerne Dom zu rhus, bis der weiter östlich gelegene Nachfolgebau in Betrieb genommen wurde und die Dominikaner einzogen. Nach der Reformation wurde die Kirche zu einer evangelisch-luhtherischen Pfarrkirche umgewidmet. Unter dem Chor der heutigen Kirche liegt eine vollständig erhaltene Krypta, die man möglicherweise als den ältesten bewahrten Steinkirchenbau in ganz Nordeuropa ansehen kann. Vermutlich entstand sie kurz nach 1060, als der hölzerne Dom bei einem Angriff Harald des Harten niedergebrannt wurde. Der Bau besteht aus Quellenkalk. Zu einem unbekannten Zeitpunkt wurde der Zugang vom inzwischen darüber gebauten neuen Schiff und Chor zugemauert. Der alte Kirchensaal geriet völlig in Vergessenheit und wurde erst 1955 anlässlich einer Renovierung der Kirche wieder entdeckt. Zwei Jahre später wurde der gewölbte Saal erneut geweiht und wird seither regelmäßig für besondere Gottesdienste genutzt. Das romanische Kruzifix über dem Altar ist eine Kopie. Das Original aus Gammel by befindet sich im Nationalmuseum Kopenhagen. Krypta von ca. 1060
