König Christian IV. ließ ihn 1637 bis 1642 nach Plänen des Architekten Hans van Steenwinckel der Jüngere errichten. Er diente bis 1861 als Observatorium der Universität Kopenhagen (siehe Kbenhavns Universitet Astronomisk Observatorium) und beherbergt heute noch das älteste funktionsfähige Observatorium Europas. Er ist verbunden mit der alten Universitätsbücherei und der Dreifaltigkeitskirche, die in den Jahrzehnten nach dem Turmbau errichtet wurden. Der Rundetrn ist heute eine bekannte Touristenattraktion und sein Dach ein vielbesuchter Aussichtspunkt. Der kreisrunde Turm besitzt eine Höhe von 34,8 ,m und einen Durchmesser von etwa 15 ,m. Bestiegen wird er, abgesehen vom Aufgang zum eigentlichen Observatorium auf dem Dach, nicht über Treppen, sondern über einen 209 m langen ansteigenden spiralförmigen Gang, der sich 7,5 Mal um die Turmmitte windet. Durch diese europaweit einzigartige Rampenkonstruktion wurde es Pferdewagen ermöglicht, Bücherladungen in und aus der Bibliothek zu bringen, die ebenso wie die Dreifaltigkeitskirche durch den Turm zugänglich ist. Das Eisengeländer auf der Aussichtsplattform wurde 1643 von Caspar Fincke gefertigt. Es enthält an mehreren Stellen die Buchstaben RFP, eine Abkürzung für den Wahlspruch König Christians IV: Regna Firmat Pietas - Frömmigkeit stärkt die (König)Reiche.
