In der Region rhus leben insgesamt 808.288 Einwohner. Die Stadt hat seit 1928 eine Universität, vielseitige Industrie und einen Seehafen im Kattegat. Der Ort an der Mündung der Au, worauf der Name hinweist, ist seit der Wikingerzeit besiedelt. Neue Ausgrabungen in rhus ergaben, dass die Stadt um 770 gegründet wurde. Demnach ist rhus mindestens 100 Jahre älter als bisher angenommen und eine der ältesten Städte in Nordeuropa. Die heutige Großstadt ist nach Haithabu und Ribe die dritte Stadt die in den Annalen erwähnt wird und bereits 948 Bischofssitz gewesen sein soll, (Bistum rhus und seine Bischöfe), obwohl sich Harald Blauzahn erst 960 taufen lässt. 965 und 988 taucht der Name wiederum in deutschen Dokumenten auf. Die Wikinger, die nach archäologischen Befunden die vier Hektar große Siedlung gründen und wie Haithabu und Dankirke mit einem Wall umgeben, hinterlassen im Stadtgebiet sechs Runensteine. Seit 1040 wurden in der Stadt Münzen geschlagen.
