Dezember 2006 war Sby eine eigene Kommune, nun gehört diese ca. 8.500 Einwohner zählende Stadt in der Landschaft Vendsyssel zur Frederikshavn Kommune. Frederikshavn liegt etwa 12 ,km nördlich, Aalborg 50 ,km südwestlich. Beide Städte sind über den autobahnähnlichen Frederikshavnmotorvejen (E ,45), der in der Nähe vorbeiführt, zu erreichen. Der Ort entstand im 13. ,Jahrhundert um die Marienkirche, an die ein Karmeliterkloster angeschlossen war.
