Sie ist die Bezirkshauptstadt des gleichnamigen Bezirks. Im Jahr 831 wird Melk erstmals urkundlich als Medilica erwähnt. Auch im Nibelungenlied wird der Ort mit dem mittelhochdeutschen Namen Medelike erwähnt. Leopold I., 976 mit dem Gebiet des heutigen Südwestens Niederösterreichs als Markgraf belehnt, machte die Burg in Melk zu seiner Residenz und seine Nachfolger statteten sie mit wertvollen Schätzen und Reliquien aus.
