Almada bekam im Jahre 1973 das Stadtrecht. Der Name stammt aus der Zeit der arabischen Besatzung der iberischen Halbinsel. Ursprünglich hieß die Stadt al-Madan. An der Vorsilbe erkennt man viele Namen im Portugiesischen, die aus der Zeit der Besatzung stammen (so zum Beispiel den Stadtteil Lissabons namens Alfama).
