Die Stadt besitzt einen der größten spanischen Flughäfen, einen Handelshafen und eine Universität. Sie ist aufgrund ihres Klimas eines der wichtigsten Urlaubsziele der Iberischen Halbinsel. M¡laga ist in kulinarischer Hinsicht bekannt für Rosinen und Wein (Muskateller). Die Stadt bewirbt sich derzeit als Europäische Kulturhauptstadt für das Jahr 2016. M¡laga liegt am westlichen Teil des Mittelmeers, an der Costa del Sol und ist etwas mehr als 100km nordöstlich von Gibraltar entfernt. Die Stadt ist komplett eingefasst von Bergen, den sogenannten Montes de M¡laga. Zwei Flüsse durchqueren die Stadt und münden ins Mittelmeer, der Guadalmedina und der Guadalhorce. Das Klima in M¡laga ist mediterran, das Wetter über die meiste Zeit des Jahres sonnig. Die relative Nähe der Berge beeinflusst das Küstenklima durch das Zusammentreffen verschieden temperierter Luftmassen mit, so dass die Winter in M¡laga mild bleiben. Die Sommer sind überdurchschnittlich trocken und heiß, die Temperaturen liegen oft deutlich über 30C. Die Luftfeuchtigkeit ist allerdings sehr gering, so dass es in der Regel nicht stickig oder schwül wird. Das Wetter in M¡laga ist häufig sehr wechselhaft, vor allem im Oktober, April und Mai kann es zu vereinzelten Niederschlägen kommen, im Winter häufig zu längeren Regenperioden.
