Mit 554.400 Einwohnern (2007) ist sie die größte Stadt des Landes. Sie liegt an der Mündung der Vilnia in die Neris, in einem waldreichen Gebiet nur etwa 40 km von der weißrussischen Grenze entfernt. Vilnius ist katholischer Erzbischofssitz und mit der 1579 gegründeten Universität Vilnius eine der ältesten Universitätsstädte Europas. Sie trägt gemeinsam mit der Stadt Linz den Titel Europäische Kulturhauptstadt für das Jahr 2009. Im Gegensatz zu den Hauptstädten der baltischen Nachbarländer Lettland und Estland, Riga und Tallinn, gelang es dem Deutschen Orden im Mittelalter nicht, Vilnius einzunehmen. Die Stadt geht im Gegensatz zu den beiden anderen baltischen Metropolen auch nicht auf eine mittelalterliche deutsche Siedlung zurück, sondern war als Hauptstadt Litauens das administrative Zentrum eines ausgedehnten Großreiches, das auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Macht zeitweise von der Ostsee bis zum Schwarzen Meer reichte.
