Besuch der Chapelle Notre Dame des Auzils
Tour / hiking / bike / ski / Hiking
Visible from afar from the Mediterranean Sea, the Notre Dame des Auzils chapel was built on a hill in the Clape massif around 1635 in honor of seafarers. Of course, you also have a wonderful view of the coastline and the sea from the church in the opposite direction. You can reach it from a hiking car park, which is about 70 meters below the church. If you want, you can also spend the night on this square. The distance to the church is about 700 meters and it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to get there. When planning your personal time, however, you should take into account that the church is not always open. During our visit in September 2015, it was only open from 10:00 a.m., closed again at 5:30 p.m. and also closed during the lunch break between 12:20 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday was closed all day. The chapel can already be seen from the parking lot. Initially it goes up a gravel path, later you can also use the stone steps next to the path. Along the way there are twenty-six mock graves of seafarers who died, telling the stories of their shipwreck. The oldest stone is from 1844. About halfway you reach the abandoned hut of hermits who lived here, isolated from all civilization, for more than two hundred years until the end of the 19th century. One of the last of its kind died in 1888 and had created a small garden below the hut to show everyone the natural beauty of this region. This garden is maintained and can still be visited today. Once at the top, you can view numerous pictures of ships in distress inside the chapel room. The purely ecclesiastical institutions are almost pushed into the background. Just below the church walls is a cave where bats are said to nest. The forest above the church is very sparse and the view extends from here down over the Gulf of Lion to the horizon of the Mediterranean Sea.
