Ruine Schimmelsprung - Gars/Kamp
Sight / ruin
The ruins of Schimmelsprung are located in Thunau am Kamp near Gars am Kamp in Lower Austria. It is located on a rock about 100 m above the right bank of the Kamp. The first documented mention dates back to 1196. At the end of the 14th century the castle fell into disrepair and was never rebuilt. It has since fallen into ruin. The ruin got its name from the legends. The lord of the castle is portrayed in all possible versions as a very domineering and brutal knight who exploited his subjects. The oppressed peasants didnīt put up with this any longer and besieged the castle. When the castle was stormed, the lord of the castle wanted to flee with his white horse and when he recognized the hopeless situation, he spurred his horse and threw himself over the rock face.
