Palácio Nacional da Ajuda

The Palácio Nacional da Ajuda is a historic building in Lisbon, Portugal. It was once the residence of the Portuguese kings and now serves as a museum. The castle was built in the 19th century in the classicism style. It is a neoclassical building from the first half of the 19th century and became the royal residence when King Luís I ascended the throne and married an Italian princess, Maria Pia of Savoy. The Palácio Nacional da Ajuda houses an important collection of decorative works of art from the 18th and 19th centuries, including gold and silver work, textiles, furniture, ceramics, paintings, sculptures and photographs. The building is also the site for official ceremonies and ceremonial acts of the President of the Republic.
