Kotor
Sight / Town
Kotor, located at the south-eastern tip of the Kotor Bay, was decisively shaped by the Venetians.
The city was badly hit by an earthquake in 1979, but was rebuilt by 1989 thanks to support from UNESCO. Kotor is now a World Heritage Site.
Kotor´s history can be traced back almost 2000 years, the city´s strong fortifications helped to ensure that the buildings of the different eras could not fall victim to the usual destruction and looting of occupying powers or wars. Only one or the other building proved powerless against earthquakes.
The construction of the city walls was started by the Venetians in the 15th century and strengthened over the centuries. Construction was only completed in the 19th century. Today, the wall stretches 4.5 kilometers around the city on the slopes of the Bay of Kotor.
