Tahkuna Leuchtturm
Sight / lighthouse
Takhuna is located on Estonia´s second largest island, Hiiuma. The lighthouse was built in 1873/1874 with ready-made castings from France. It is the tallest lighthouse on the Estonian coast with a height of 42.7 m above sea level. At the foot of the lighthouse, a monument was erected in memory of the fierce battles between the Red Army and the Wehrmacht during World War II (1941). In 1995 the Estonia memorial to the victims of the ferry accident on September 28, 1994 was erected behind the lighthouse. The bronze bell hanging from a pendulum rings in strong winds.
