Schwanenstein, Sagenumwobener Findling
Sight / Landscape
The Schwanenstein is a large boulder made of hammer granite that is located in Lohme on the island of Rügen. It is 7 meters long, 5 meters wide and weighs 162 tons. The boulder probably comes from the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm and came to the coast of the island of Rügen during the last ice age. The name !Schwanenstein! comes from a legend according to which babies on Rügen are brought by the Adebar in summer and by the swan in winter. The Schwanenstein is of particular geological and cultural interest due to its size and tragic history. A sad tragedy occurred on February 13, 1956, when some boys were playing on the frozen sea near the Swan Stone and were endangered by a sudden storm.
