Klosterruine Riseberga
Sight / monastery
The former Cistercian monastery of Riseberga was founded as a nunnery at the end of the 11th century and over the next 350 years acquired extensive estates in many parts of Sweden. In the course of the Reformation, however, the possessions had to be handed over to the Swedish royal family. After a lightning strike in 1546, the monastery was destroyed by fire and never rebuilt. The limestone from which the monastery walls were made was used to build other buildings or turned into quicklime. Today only the foundation walls of the monastery building, which have been uncovered again, and parts of the western church wall are preserved. Display boards document the former condition of the monastery, including monastery life at that time. The site is freely accessible. A parking lot is located about 200 meters northwest of the site. An amphitheater with about 1200 seats was built near the monastery in 1937, where events are still held.
