Stift Seckau
Sight / monastery
The Augustinians were already based in Seckau in 1140. The construction of the Romanesque church began in 1143 under Pope Innocent II. The monastery was the cultural center of the area for more than 600 years. In 1782, Emperor Joseph II had the monastery closed and it took until 1883 for the Benedictines to bring life back into the monastery when they moved in.
Guided tours in and around the monastery are offered from May to October.
