Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
Sight / monastery
King Manuel I commissioned the construction of the Monsteiro dos Jerónimos in gratitude for Vasco da Gama´s discovery of the sea route to India in 1502. As one of the few buildings, the monastery survived the great earthquake almost undamaged and is considered the most important building of Manueline architecture. The limestone facade has handsome decorations| the southern portal created by Joao de Castilho is a true work of art. Inside the monastery church of Santa Maria, the sarcophagi of some Portuguese kings, including Manuel I, can be found near the high altar. Vasco da Gama´s tomb is under the gallery. The two-storey cloister is richly decorated and is considered the most beautiful in Europe. In the dining room, the azulejos from the 18th century are worth seeing. The Museum of Archeology and the Naval Museum are housed in the side wing of the monastery.
Open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. (summer 6.30 p.m.)
