Ruine Schaunberg
Sight / Castle
About five kilometers northwest of Eferding you can visit the remains of the largest castle complex in Upper Austria. Schaunberg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1161. For 400 years the castle was owned by the Schaunberg family with special imperial rights until the family died out in 1559. With 4 moats and 2 drawbridges, the castle withstood several attacks by the Habsburgs. Once located on a rock near Hartkirchen with an area of 17,500 square meters, surrounded by curtain walls up to 4 meters thick, today only the mighty remains of the wall with clear Gothic details can be admired. Even the keep partially collapsed in 1825. A 32 meter high torso remained, which can be climbed over 186 steps. At the top you reach a viewing platform, from which you have a wonderful view over the Mühlviertel, the Danube plain and the Danube itself. But the dimensions of the castle are also impressive when viewed from this exposed location. The castle can be visited for a small fee (treasury of trust). There is a parking lot in the immediate vicinity on the Schaumbergstrasse above the castle walls.
