Burgruine Aggstein
Sight / Castle
Aggstein Castle, built by the Kuenringers around 1200, is enthroned high above the Danube valley, visible from afar. The castle achieved cruel notoriety under Jörg Scheck von Wald, a robber baron. It plundered the Danube ships and the prisoners were exposed to %u201ERosengärtlein", a ledge. There was no escape, they could only jump down or starve to death. After a renovation in the 19th century, the remains of the three-storey tower and the palace are still preserved from the original complex. The castle can be visited today and is a popular destination. The castle can be visited daily from April to mid-November from 9am to 6pm, in November only on Saturdays and Sundays 24.09.2023:
