Atomium
Sight / building
The Atomium is an iconic landmark of Brussels and Belgium. Built for the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958, it is a unique architectural creation. The building consists of nine 18 meter diameter stainless steel spheres, which are connected to each other and form the shape of an enlarged iron crystal structure. The Atomium stands 102 meters high and offers breathtaking panoramic views over Brussels. It houses exhibition areas, a restaurant and an observation deck in the top sphere. The Atomium is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The official names of the monument are !l´Atomium! in French and !het Atomium! in Dutch, as the Brussels region is bilingual. The Atomium is an integral part of Brussels´ skyline and has become an enduring symbol of the city since its creation.
