Njegos Mausoleum

The highest mausoleum in Europe is located on the Jezerski vrh (1657m) in the Lovcen Mountains. It was built by the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic and is the burial place of the ruler and poet Petar Petrovic Njegos who has been buried here since 1974 after the original tomb was destroyed. An 80 m long tunnel and 461 steps lead to the burial chapel. Peter II Petr ovic (1813-1851) was born in Njegusi and as a monarch introduced taxes, established elementary schools and gained world fame as a poet prince with the works ´The Torch of the Microcosm, the Serbian Mirror and the False Tsar´. The Njegos statue with the eagle , the symbol of freedom, made of black granite weighs about 28 tons and can be visited like the sacophage in the mausoleum. Admission € 3, -/p. p
