Sight / building
The Aqueduto das Águas Livres is an impressive structure. It was built between 1731 and 1748 at the behest of King John V to improve the city´s drinking water supply. The Aqueduto stretches across the Alcântara valley and has a total length of 19 km, from Queluz through Caneas to the Campolide district. It is a complex system for developing, delivering and distributing water to the city
The Aqueduto das Águas Livres survived the severe earthquake of 1755 unscathed and is still functioning today. It consists of impressive stone arches, the tallest of which is 65 meters high and 32 meters wide. The construction of the aqueduct contributed significantly to solving Lisbon´s chronic water supply problems.
Today you can take the footpath over the Aqueduto das Águas Livres and enjoy a great view. The Aqueduto is one of Portugal´s most famous 18th-century landmarks and an important cultural heritage site.
It was decommissioned in 1973 and opened to the public in 1986.
