Burgus Budakalász-Luppa csárda
Sight / excavation
The Burgus Budakalász-Luppa csárda was a Roman military post that served as a late antique residential and watchtower to monitor a section of the Danube in the Pannonian Limes. This river formed the Roman imperial border in large sections. The ancient walls of the fortification as well as the large burgus, which is a smaller tower-like fort from late antiquity, existed in their original form until the Middle Ages. The most important excavations took place between 1952 and 1961 at Budakalász-Luppa csárda between Szentendre and Budapest. The easiest way to reach Luppa Island (Luppa-sziget) is from Budakalász by ferry, which runs daily every hour starting in April. Sándor Soproni was an archaeologist in Hungary who wrote work on the late Roman military buildings and ancient border defenses of Pannonia. The ceramic pieces found from the Budakalász-Luppa csárda Burgus can be dated to the end of the second half of the 4th century. Some pieces may also be dated to the first third of the 5th century. The entire range of pottery from Burgus consists of Roman types, and no barbarian influence can be detected.
