Antike Stadt Kassope

Kassope (Greek Kaw) was an ancient city in northwest Greece, in the Epirus region. The city is located on a 700 m high mountain, about 20 kilometers north of Preveza and six kilometers from the sea. Kassope is considered to be one of the best-preserved examples of a city with a perpendicular street network according to the Hippodamian plan in Greece.
The city of Kassope was founded in the 4th century BC. Founded in the 1st century BC and was an important center in the region. The finds on site provide extensive evidence of a Late Classic Greek city. The city´s location on a high plateau allowed a wide view of the Ambrakiko Bay, the peninsula and the Ionian Sea. It is believed that up to 9,000 people lived in this city, all of whom had the same rights and responsibilities.
The city of Kassope was moved south by order of Augustus to make room for the founding of the city of Nicopolis. The archaeological finds at Kassope are closely linked to the archaeologist William Martin Leake from England, who was quickly able to link the finds to the ancient city.
Kassope is also known for its rectangular street network dating back to the fourth century BC. BC and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a city with a rectangular street network according to the Hippodamian plan in Greece.
