römisches Ausgrabung Cannabiaca
Sight / excavation
Cannabiaca, the Roman fort in Zeiselmauer, Austria, is an important archaeological site located in the area of the former Roman province of Noricum. The finds from excavations on the Zeiselmauer church square in the 1990s speak in favor of Cannabiaca. It is believed that the Zeiselmauer fort may have been the ancient Cannabiaca, which was part of the Roman Danube Limes fortification chain in Austria. Zeiselmauer is one of the best-researched Roman sites in Austria and, after Carnuntum, is home to the best-preserved ancient buildings in the country.
Systematic excavations in Zeiselmauer only took place from around 1910, with others following in the 1970s. Today, after Carnuntum, Cannabiaca is home to the best-preserved ancient buildings in Austria. An approximately 500 meter long circular route connects the still visible Roman buildings in about an hour. It begins at the church square, where the Roman flag shrine of the staff building (principia) from the 3rd century AD is located under the church. Zeiselmauer is most likely the Roman Cannabiaca, the easternmost fort on the Noric Danube Limes.
