UNESCO - Nationalpark Jasmund
Park / Nature park
The Jasmund National Park is located on the peninsula of the same name between the port town of Sassnitz and the town of Lohme and, with a total area of 3,070 hectares, is the smallest national park in Germany. The area was declared a protected natural area in 1990 and includes the Stubnitz ridge, 161 m above sea level, with its old beech forest, the well-known steep banks of the chalk coast with the so-called Knigsstuhl and a small area of the Baltic Sea. A total of 493 hectares of the beech forests in the national park have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.
The Jasmund National Park is famous for the largest chalk cliffs in Germany, the highest point of which is the Königsstuhl at 118 m above the Baltic Sea. The chalk cliffs belong to the Rügen chalk formation and are subject to constant erosion. With every storm, parts of the cliffs, including rocks and fossils of sponges, oysters and sea urchins, fall off .
In the heart of the national park are ancient beech forests, which have been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. These forests are an important part of the national park and help preserve natural wealth for future generations.
