Orakel von Delphi
Museum / Museum General
The Oracle of Delphi was an important divination site in ancient Greece and was considered the most important in the Hellenic world. The cult site was located on the slope of Mount Parnassus near the city of Delphi in the Phocis region. Delphi was long considered the center of the world and was symbolically marked by the Omphalos, which was located in the Temple of Apollo.
The history of the Oracle of Delphi dates back to late antiquity. People considered the place of worship at Delphi to be the center of the earth. In the Temple of Apollo there was a stone called Omphalos, which marked the navel of the world. Greek mythology says that Zeus sent two eagles, which then circled the world in opposite directions. At the end of their journey they met at the Omphalos of Delphi.
The oracular sayings of Delphi were highly relevant to the lives of the ancient Greeks and were generally accepted. The oracle sites, including Delphi, were banned by Emperor Theodosius I in 391. But the effect of the oracle is also present in the present. At the 2010 World Cup, the octopus Paul was used as an oracle to predict the results of the national team. All the prophecies turned out to be correct at that time.
The way the oracle worked was not an automatic process, but a ritual carried out by the priests. People had to give money or offerings, such as animals or food, to the priests. They told the priests their questions, who then brought them before the Phytia. People were not allowed to be present at the ritual, only the priests.
The sanctuary with the oracle of Delphi is located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus and was THE Greek place of pilgrimage and prophecy in antiquity. [ click for more information ]
