Iglesia de San Jose
Church / church
The Iglesia de San Jose in Cádiz, Spain, is a significant church located outside the historic city walls. It was the first church built outside the Puertas de Tierra and the city´s traditional historic center. The church is built in the Baroque style and has a perfectly symmetrical main facade with an entrance portal flanked by two twin bell towers. Above the semicircular arch of the main entrance portal is a niche with the statue of the patron saint, San José, created by the sculptor Cosme Velázquez.
The church was built by the architects Torcuato Cayón and Torcuato Benjumeda and was declared a cultural asset in 1979. Its interior is decorated in bright white, giving a feeling of space and clarity. The church is not cluttered like most other churches and does not house much religious art. It was a mandatory stop before funerals at San Jose Cemetery to say goodbye to the deceased.
The Iglesia de San Jose is also known for its beautiful Baroque architecture and is home to the Brotherhood of La Borriquita. It has great service times and is appreciated by visitors for its artistic significance and good parochial service.
