The annexation of Transylvania to Romania after World War I led to the construction of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in 1921-1923. King Ferdinand I and his wife Queen Marie were crowned here on October 15, 1922. The neo-Byzantine building is framed by a rectangle of residential and administrative buildings. The main entrance is through the 58 meter high bell tower. The cathedral is the episcopal church of the Romanian Orthodox Archeparchy of Alba Iulia.
