Das Franziskanerkloster in Füssen
Film /
The monastery dedicated to St. Stephen was founded in 1628 by Heinrich von Knoeringen, Prince Bishop of Augsburg, and Abbot Martin von Sankt Mang after the Jesuits had left Füssen and settled in Kaufbeuren. The first religious came from Reutte in Tyrol. In 1632 the newly built monastery was damaged when the Swedes passed through. Extensive renovations were necessary. In 1662 a brewery and in 1695 a brandy distillery were built. From 1712 a second wing was added to the monastery building. The Church of St. Stephen was rebuilt from 1763 to 1767. 1803 the monastery became the property of the Teutonic Order. In 1805 he gave it to the state, which set up a central Franciscan monastery there. The monastery was forbidden to accept new members or to beg for food. In 1835, the monastery received a guarantee from King Ludwig I of Bavaria, initially as a hospice. In 1913 it was raised again to the status of a convention. 1979 the Bishopric of Augsburg took ownership of the complex and renovated the monastery and church. Today the monastery serves as a place of residence for older Franciscan brothers and works in the pastoral care of the Füssen parish community.
