Cahir Castle
Castle / Castle
Not far from Cashel is another historical highlight of the island. The small town of Cahir with its Cahir Castle on the River Suir has a long history dating back to before the Christianisation of Ireland. The mighty castle is one of the largest and best preserved fortifications in all of Ireland. The year 1375 is historically interesting, when a James Butler received the newly created barony of Cahir and the associated Cahir Castle. The Butlers arrived in the region from England after the Anglo-Norman invasion and were established nobility a hundred years later. From this prosperous position, the Butlers expanded Cahir Castle over several centuries. In doing so they created one of the largest castles in Ireland. However, the Butkers distanced themselves from the English crown and thus attracted the displeasure of England. A siege ended with the abandonment and surrender of the castle. Despite the betrayal of the English crown, Butler received a pardon and his castle back. Despite this, Cahir Castle passed into Cromwellian possession without a fight in 1650. Eventually the facility fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, descendants of a branch line of the Butlers tried to preserve the castle. But with the death of the last descendant, the Butlers´ time came to an end. In 1964 Cahir Castle passed into state ownership.
