Munot
Castle / Castle
The Munot is a ring-shaped fortress built in the 16th century. The castle was built from ashlars (Malm), which were removed from the area. In October 1798 the city of Schaffhausen was besieged by the French. In November 1798, French marshal André Masséna requested housing for French soldiers wounded at the Battle of Stockach and Ostrach. On April 13, 1799, the pressure from the Austrian army increased. From the east, General Maximilian Baillet von Latour and Major Michael von Kienmayer positioned over 6,000 men in Herblingen and Büsingen. The city was given an ultimatum to hand over the fortress and city, which went unanswered. At 3:00 p.m. the order was given to shell and storm the city. The French troops on the Munot returned fire. But when the Austrian troops had already conquered the city at 5:00 a.m., the French capitulated. While fleeing from the Austrians, the Grubenmann Bridge was set on fire. Today, various cultural events are held on the Munot by the Munot association. The Munot guard still lives in the Munot tower today. Every day at 9:00 p.m. the Munot bells ring out. In addition to the task of ringing the Munot bell, the main task of the watchman today is to give guided tours for tourists. The Munot guard has been around since 1589. At that time, the ringing of the bells was a signal that the city gates and inns had to be closed. There is an old, well-known Swiss folk song about the Munot bell that was written in 1911 by Dr.
