Der Grendel diente als Durchgang für den Schiffsverkehr zwischen Limmat und Zürichsee. Es war das einzige Zürcher Wassertor und stand am rechten Ufer in der Limmat, etwa beim nördlichen Ende des heutigen Bellevuehauses (Limmatquai 3) respektive beim Ausgangspunkt des Utoquais im Quartier Rathaus (Kreis 1). Die Stadt Zürich schützte sich vermutlich bereits im Hochmittelalter zusätzlich durch Letzinen und Letzigräben, als den Stadtmauern vorgelagerte Verteidigungslinien, am linken und am rechten Limmatufer, am Zürichberg, Käferberg und Uetliberg sowie im Limmattal mit weiteren Vorwerken. Beim Grendeltor verlief zur Seeseite hin ein hoher Zaun, der sogenannte Gran[1] über die Limmat zum gegenüberliegenden Ende der Stadtmauer. Eine doppelte Reihe von Palisaden schützte den Limmatabfluss auf Seeseite, die Schwirren.[2] Allgemein als Schwirren bezeichnet werden Seeuferbefestigungen in Ufernähe, die das Anlanden feindlicher Schiffe verhindern sollten die bedeutendsten sind bei Arth, Brunnen und Stansstad. Sie sind von Letzinen abgeleitet, welche zumeist in Form von Hecken, Holzzäunen, Palisaden und später Steinmauern mit Gräben, topographische Besonderheiten nutzten.[3]
