Cueva de la Pileta

The Cueva de la Pileta is an important prehistoric site and a must-see for tourists who want to get to know the Serrana de Ronda in Spain better. The cave was discovered by chance by the farmer Jos� Bull¨Ĥ Lobato and declared a natural monument in 1924. It is located in Benaoján, 76 km from Marbella and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The last group will be let in at this time.
The cave houses over 100 prehistoric paintings, including prehistoric animal and abstract paintings that are up to 30,000 years old. The paintings come from the Palelithic and Neolithic periods. The cave was discovered in 1905 by Jos� Bull� Lobato and explored and studied by various researchers such as Willoughby Verner, Henri Breuil and Hugo Obermaier.
To reach the cave, a 3.35 km hike may be required from the bus or train station in Benaoján. It is recommended to wear shoes with good grip as the cave floor can be slippery.
The cave is now run by the descendants of Jos� Bullón, who limit groups to a maximum of 20 people.
There is an entry fee of EUR 10 per person to visit the cave. Tours are offered in both Spanish and English.
